Best Marriage and Family Therapy Schools in Northern California

What you’ll learn in this article…

  • San Francisco State pairs a 60-unit master's with 150-plus agency placements.
  • BLS: California led all states in licensed MFT employment, May 2024.
  • Licensed MFT positions in California are projected to grow 26.6% through 2032.

Which Northern California master's in marriage and family therapy program fits your budget, your work schedule, and the path to an LMFT license? The question matters because California employed more licensed MFTs than any other state as of May 2024, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That demand is not slowing. Notre Dame de Namur University, in its overview of California licensure steps, cites the California MFT Job Outlook projection of 26.6% growth in licensed MFT positions through 2032, plus a 2025 state report finding clinician shortages in every California county and region.

Strong demand does not make every program equal. Tuition, accreditation status and placement access vary widely, and those differences shape how quickly a graduate can accrue supervised hours.

Best Marriage and Family Therapy Schools in Northern California, Ranked

Northern California's MFT options run from San Francisco State's 60-unit counseling master's and its network of more than 150 community agency placements to University of the Pacific's Stockton-based counseling psychology program. Private universities round out the list with heavier credit loads, certificate add-ons, and on-site training clinics. Each entry below notes what the program covers, how long it takes, and what it asks of applicants.

How We Ranked Northern California MFT Schools

California employed more licensed MFTs than any other state as of May 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best MFT programs in California that feed that workforce deserve a close, numbers-first look. Our ranking uses federal College Scorecard data so every school is measured against the same yardstick.

What Moves a School Up the List

  • Net price: What students actually pay after grants and scholarships, averaged across the whole institution , a useful comparison point for the cheapest MFT programs.
  • Completions: How many students finish the relevant graduate program. This signals program size and stability.
  • Program-level earnings and debt: Where published, median earnings for graduates of the specific program, paired with typical borrowing. Each earnings figure is labeled with its time window (for example, one year or four years after completion). Early-career pay for associate MFTs still earning supervised hours looks very different from pay after licensure.
  • Institution-level outcomes: Graduation rate and similar school-wide measures that reflect overall student support.

Read the Numbers Carefully

Graduation rate and net price describe the entire institution, not the MFT program alone. A university's figure blends undergraduates, other graduate programs, and part-time learners. Treat these numbers as context for the school, not a precise forecast for your MFT degree. When program-level earnings are not yet available for a school, we say so plainly rather than fill the gap.

What the Ranking Can't Tell You

Data won't show whether a program holds COAMFTE accreditation or simply meets BBS requirements. It also can't show how strong a school's clinical placement network is or whether the cohort culture fits you. Those factors can matter as much as cost. Review the accreditation, admissions, and clinical placement sections below before building your shortlist. Use the ranking as a starting filter, not a final verdict.

COAMFTE Vs. Bbs-Approved: Accreditation Status of Bay Area and Sacramento MFT Programs

Choosing an MFT program in Northern California means understanding two separate approval tracks. COAMFTE Accreditation is the main national accrediting body for marriage and family therapy education. A COAMFTE-accredited program has met a specific set of educational quality and clinical training standards. California's California BBS Licensing approval, by contrast, means the state board considers the degree to meet the coursework requirements for LMFT licensure. A school can hold one status without the other, so applicants should not assume the terms are interchangeable.

Verified 2026 status at a glance

  • Alliant International University: The MA in Marital and Family Therapy is COAMFTE-accredited1, including on-campus and online formats. Confirm whether the Sacramento campus has its own separate COAMFTE listing.
  • San Francisco State University: Meets California BBS coursework requirements for LMFT preparation2, based on current available information.
  • Samuel Merritt University: The Master of Marriage and Family Therapy is not COAMFTE-accredited in 20261. The university states it will seek accreditation in 2028.
  • Notre Dame de Namur University and Dominican University of California: Identified as offering dual LMFT/LPCC eligibility1.

Verified COAMFTE or BBS status was not established in the reviewed materials for several other Bay Area and Sacramento programs, including USF, CSU Chico, and CSU East Bay.

Why dual LMFT/LPCC eligibility matters

California requires a degree to qualify separately for each license type.3 A program listed as dual eligible means its curriculum is structured to support both the LMFT and LPCC coursework pathways. That flexibility can be useful if you later want to work in broader clinical counseling settings rather than focusing entirely on relational and family systems. Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican University of California are flagged as dual eligibility in 2026, but LPCC status is not automatic for every BBS-approved MFT program. Check the curriculum against the BBS LPCC requirements.

Confirm current status before applying

Accreditation and BBS statuses change. Samuel Merritt, for example, is planning possible COAMFTE accreditation in 2028, which means its status could shift after the current admissions cycle. Before submitting applications, check the COAMFTE-Accredited Programs directory and the California BBS education resources for the most recent program-specific listing. If a program is not clearly listed, contact the admissions office and ask for its current COAMFTE status and BBS LMFT or LPCC approval letter.

MFT Admission Requirements, Prerequisites and Application Timelines

Most Northern California MFT programs share a similar admissions core, but prerequisites, GPA expectations and deadlines vary by school. Use this checklist to plan, and confirm current-year details with each admissions office before you apply.

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
CSU Chico, USF, Notre Dame de Namur, Alliant Sacramento and Samuel Merritt require a bachelor's degree, but none requires a psychology major. Career changers from business, education or the arts are eligible.
  2. Prerequisite coursework
CSU Chico requires Research Methods, Developmental Psychology, Statistics and Abnormal Psychology, finished before fall classes begin. Each can come from any discipline and any accredited college, which lets non-psychology majors fill gaps at a community college. Notre Dame de Namur asks for General and Abnormal Psychology. Several private programs list no specific prerequisites.
  3. GPA expectations
Most schools set recommended GPAs, not hard cutoffs. Samuel Merritt recommends a 3.0. Notre Dame de Namur prefers a 3.0 but may consider applicants between 2.5 and 3.0. USF's published figures range from 2.75 to 3.0. CSU Chico lists no minimum.
  4. GRE policy
CSU Chico and USF do not require the GRE. Confirm testing policies directly with other schools.
  5. Personal statement, references and interview
Expect to explain your interest in relational therapy and your fit for clinical work. Choose recommenders who can speak to your maturity and interpersonal skills.
  6. Deadlines and cohort start terms
CSU Chico admits for fall only. Its application window runs August 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 for fall 2027 entry. USF admits fall cohorts on a rolling basis until locations fill. Its San Francisco campus had closed fall 2026 admissions by late September 2026. Apply early, and verify every deadline each cycle.

Clinical Placements and Practicum: Where Northern California Trainees Get Hours

Your practicum placement is your first real clinical experience; choose well, and it can shorten the road to licensure.

How Practicum Works

Practicum, also called traineeship or clinical fieldwork, is supervised client work done while you are enrolled. The BBS requires the qualifying degree to include at least 6 semester or 9 quarter units of supervised clinical placement, a core part of MFT practicum requirements.1 Hours begin counting only after you finish 12 semester or 18 quarter units of graduate instruction.2 Some programs run placement networks and approve or assign sites. Others expect students to find their own, subject to program approval.

What Programs Require and Where Students Train

  • USF: A 9 to 12 month final-year traineeship totaling at least 425 hours, including 225 direct clinical hours (280 for students pursuing MFT and PCC together). Placements are community-based and school-based Bay Area sites, and one program review notes a Kaiser Permanente Mental Health Scholars Academy partnership.3
  • Alliant Sacramento: At least 300 direct client-contact hours, with 150 or more with couples and families, plus 100 hours of supervision, at least 50 of them by direct observation or recorded sessions.4
  • Dominican, NDNU and CSU East Bay: Current hour totals and named county, Kaiser or community partners could not be confirmed, so ask each program for its written placement list.

County behavioral health departments, community clinics and health systems are the site types to look for across the region, especially for MFT training in community mental health centers. Confirm which ones a program actually places students with.

Do Trainee Hours Count Toward the 3,000?

Often, yes, with limits. The BBS allows up to 1,300 pre-degree hours, of which no more than 750 can be counseling and the remaining 550 must be nonclinical.2 The degree practicum must include at least 225 face-to-face counseling hours, and up to 75 may be client-centered advocacy.5 Practicum hours can carry over to postdegree experience if they qualify, are documented, and are approved by your school and supervisor. A program's total and the BBS-countable amount may differ, and not every hour labeled "practicum" qualifies.

Ask each program:

  • Do you arrange placements, or do students find sites?
  • Which sites took students this year?
  • How many practicum hours have graduates typically had approved for BBS credit?
  • Who signs off on hours?

Time to Licensure

The sequence is fixed: earn the qualifying degree, register with the BBS as an associate, complete 3,000 AMFT California supervised hours, then pass the licensing exams. Pre-degree hours can shorten the supervised stretch, so documentation matters from day one.

What MFTs Earn in the Bay Area and Sacramento

Northern California pays marriage and family therapists well, especially near the Bay.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Would you pay more for a private program with a smaller cohort and structured placement help?
Private tuition is usually higher, but closer faculty contact and placement support can shorten the search for a traineeship. If budget is your main limit, a public program may serve you better.
Is the commute to your traineeship site a bigger constraint than campus location?
Bay Area and Sacramento sites are spread out, and trainees often drive between practicum, work, and class. Map realistic travel times before you pick a campus, since placement location shapes your weekly schedule.
Are you comfortable with the debt level for your top choices compared with local wages?
Compare each program's total cost with the pay you can expect as an associate and licensed MFT in your region. A loan payment that strains an early-career salary can limit your options during licensure.
